This Sunday, January 31st, we celebrate the Jewish “birthday of the trees” with a Tu B’shevat seder. The Vashon Island Unitarian Fellowship will enjoy this earth-based tradition together, during our gathering for worship,, with a short ritual “meal” (seder) that explores the seasons of the spirit, connecting us to the wonderful world in which we live. This event is appropriate for the entire family, and we welcome friends of all faiths.
To fully participate, gather examples of fruits, seeds or nuts from the four categories listed below:
1) Fruits/Nuts with peels/shells: Oranges, bananas., avocados, mangoes, pineapples, carob, chocolate, pomegranate, etc.
2) Fruits with pits that we do not eat: Peaches, apricots, cherries, dates, avocados, mangoes, etc.
3) Fruits we eat ENTIRELY: Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, figs, grapes, raisins etc.
4) Fruits we DON’T NECESSARILY EAT (These are especially enjoyed for their smell and flavor added) Peppercorns, flowers, garlic, cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, maple syrup, and other herbs and seeds that might be removed before serving.
Bring TWO types of wine and/or juice — one dark and one light — like white wine and red wine, white grape juice or apple juice and purple grape juice or cranberry juice.
Finally, consider setting a small table with glasses, napkins, and maybe a knife or cutting board to enable you sample these items in the course of our time together. Prepping fruits to eat and your juices to be poured will help us to move gracefully through our ritual.
Together, we will (I hope!) create a meaningful experience of coming out of the darkness of winter into the spring, with all its hope.
Please join in the joy of moving into the light and let your own sap rise!
